LYMPHOID CELL POPULATIONS IN SPLENECTOMIZED & NON-SPLENECTOMIZED SJL/J MICE BEARING HODGKIN´S DISEASE-LIKE RETICULUM CELL SARCOMA

Abstract

|
This is analogous to the clinical situation in the staging of Hodgkin´s Disease patients. Since there were no detectable differences in B and T-cell populations and differential counts, one may conclude that the effect on survival is either due to a lessening of the tumor burden associated with splenectomy or a secondary functional effect that splenectomy causes related to the initiation and growth of tumor cells in lymph nodes, liver and other sites.
The SJL/J mouse is well established as an experimental model for the study of Hodgkins Disease. Although recent trends in the clinical management of patients with Hodgkin´s Disease have favored a more selective and individualized approach regarding the applicability of staging laparotomy, the present experimental study indicates that one should not consider splenectomy to have a detrimental effect on the B and T-cell populations. In addition our data suggests that splenectomy does not have a direct adverse effect on survival, particularly as it relates to tumor growth.
